caffeinated coffee associated with a lower risk of T2D

"Among predominantly Caucasian females with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), greater consumption of caffeinated coffee was associated with a lower risk of T2D and a more favorable metabolic profile."

It is always great to hear about benefits of coffee, but think this data need to be dissected a little. Coffee was shown to lower the risk of diabetes in this study, however, it lowered it compared to sweetened beverages. This is to be expected, if we eliminate sweetened beverages the risk of diabetes will decrease regardless of coffee consumption.

The main takeaway here is that removing sweetened beverages is associated with a lower risk of T2D and a more favorable metabolic profile. If coffee lowers the risk even more, great, but a study comparing coffee to other non-sweetened beverages needs to be done.
