How much sugar do we eat? - Sanz Solutions Health and Longevity

How much sugar do we eat?

“Two hundred years ago, the average American ate only 2 pounds of sugar a year. In 1970, we ate 123 pounds of sugar per year. Today, the average American consumes almost 152 pounds of sugar in one year. This is equal to 3 pounds (or 6 cups) of sugar consumed in one week!”

My thoughts…

This is a really staggering observation, but it doesn’t even paint the whole picture…

  • Processed foods make up 70% of the American diet.

  • More than 1/3 of American adults are obese.

  • 17% of American children are obese.

  • Obesity has an estimated associated annual medical cost of $147 billion

  • Americans spend 10 percent of their disposable income on fast food. One in four Americans eat fast food every day.

Education is the key here, we should be teaching health from nutrition at an early age. It all comes back to the core principle at Sanz Solutions, focus on eating foods that are in their natural form; vegetables, nuts, seeds, meats, fish, and fruits, in this order; eating a full spectrum of them at levels that support exercise but not body fat. Fast at least 12 hours per day.
